On Friday September 30, 2016 the Bryant Women’s soccer team defeated NEC conference rival, Robert Morris University with a score of 2-0. Coming off of a tough 2-1 loss to St. Bonaventure, NY, the Bulldogs came out ready to play despite the rainy, cold weather conditions to compete in their NEC Conference opener.
Coming out strong, Bryant got on the board early with a header from sophomore Alie Guilmette off of a free kick from freshman Caitlyn Linden within the first two minutes of the game. Holding onto the lead, the Bulldogs kept the ball in Colonial territory throughout the first 13 minutes of the game.
When the Colonials got their first shot on goal, the ball soared over the net off the foot of RMU senior Erin Ritzer. In the 19th minute of the game, RMU’s Ritzer got a free kick 30 yards out from goal, however, a clutch save by Bryant senior goalie, Kaylan Conrad allowed Bryant to hold onto their 1-0 lead. Going into halftime, the Bulldogs held a slim 1-0 lead over the Robert Morris Colonials.
As the second half began, the Bulldogs got many shots on goal, but could not drill one into the back of the net until the 7 minute mark. Bryant senior Kianna Woods came through with her first goal of the year, executing a quick turaaround and striking the ball from 25 yards out to the right post giving the Bulldogs their 2-0 lead. With a low shot save by Bryant’s goalkeeper, Conrad, the Bulldogs solidified their 2-0 victory over Robert Morris University.
With Bryant and Robert Morris being two of the top teams in the NEC Conference the teams have been consistent rivals over the past few years. This gives added signifcance to the Bulldogs hot start. Coming off of a 1-0 win over Robert Morris during the 2015- 2016 season and two consecutive ties, a 1-1 tie in double overtime during their 2014- 2015 season as well as a 2-2 tie in double overtime during their 2013- 2014 season, the Bulldogs sought continued success against the Colonials.
The Bulldogs knew that the Colonials were looking for revenge and were going to come out strong. With the Bulldogs coming out to fight, their quick goal put the Colonials on their heels. Keeping the ball in the Colonial territory in order to make them have to defend was used as an advantage for the Bulldogs.
After their big win in the NEC Conference opener against Robert Morris, the Bulldogs competed against LIU Brooklyn in their second conference game of the season. Defeating the Blackbirds by a score of 2-0 brought the Bulldogs overall record to 6-6 and their NEC record to a perfect 2-0. Bryant goals were both scored by senior Kianna Woods.
The Bulldogs look to continue their winning streak as they prepare to take on the Central Connecticut Blue Devils this Friday October 7th at 7pm away at Central Connecticut. We wish our fellow Bulldogs luck as this is our year.
