Across the country people celebrated Major League Baseball’s opening day on April 2, 2017. The season opened up with three games, Yankees v. Rays, Giants v. Diamondbacks and last year’s World Series winners the Chicago Cubs v. Cardinals (MLB Schedule). While some may be celebrating the start of America’s favorite past time, others are taking the opportunity to raise money and celebrate another chance at life thanks to an annual fundraiser the Jimmy Fund hosts during the MLB’s opening day.

The Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948 and since has raised millions of dollars to provide hope and save lives of cancer patients throughout New England. They host events throughout the year. Some of the most popular events that the Jimmy Fund host are golf tournaments, as well as walks and runs.  Since 1953, the Boston Red Sox have participated in fundraisers making this partnership one of the longest relationships between a team and a charity event in professional sports.

Since 2006, the Jimmy Fund has hosted “Rally for the Jimmy Fund” taking place on Opening Day. The “Rally for the Jimmy Fund” encourages individuals to create teams at their place of work or schools to donate money and wear their Red Sox gear on opening day. Since the “Rally for the Jimmy Fund” was created, this event has raised over $5.2 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. This year’s fundraising goal for the Rally was $750,000.  For teams that raise the most money, they get a visit from a Boston Red Sox player. Other prizes include tickets to a game, Red Sox and Jimmy Fund gear and a chance to visit the World Series trophies that the team has won over the years.

For fans that are wondering where all this money raised goes, a gift of $5 can provide transportation assistance, a gift of $25 can fund the Jimmy Fund Clinic’s toy closet and treasure chest, a gift of $35 can provide patients with personalized consultation services, a gift of $50 can help support more than 750 clinical trials, a gift of $100 can help their Mammography van reach more communities, and lastly a gift of $200 could help fund the development of new cancer drugs.

So while us New Englanders are anxiously waiting for April 3rd for the Red Sox v. the Pirates game in Boston for another chance at a World Series trophy, the “Rally for the Jimmy Fund” gives us a chance to not only celebrate opening day, and the start of America’s favorite past time, but it also gives us a chance to celebrate life and the gift of helping others. If you are interested in donating money, or hosting an event please visit the Jimmy Funds Website.
