It has long been the dream of humans to establish life on another planet. The voyage deeper into the universe grows day by day, and this mission is just another step in the process. Mars One is a work in progress that will establish human settlement on Mars in 2032. It does seem very far into the future, but this is no easy task. In fact, there are so many possibilities of drawback and error that even Mark Watney of The Martian would be second guessing it. In essence, Mars One will take fourteen more years to perfect because there can be absolutely no surprises or probabilities involved. NASA has some of the world’s most intelligent engineers and mathematicians going over the details of the mission constantly. That being said, there is not much to worry about. Getting there will of course be tedious work, but what is going to matter is ensuring those who are to live there are able to survive and establish a life for themselves in a not so gravitational friendly environment as our own on Earth.

The current status of the mission: Phase A. This is the technological phase and the most crucial to its success. In this phase, the higher level necessities and focuses will be discussed with various aerospace companies. This is an intensive where up to 2500 hours of tedious work will be required by technicians to develop the numerous segments of the mission itself. The mission design will of course be updated as progress is made, but for now this is the basic introductory phase. Later on comes the concept designs, manufacturing, and integration testing. This will allow the mission to go smoothly, efficiently, and ensure the whole system is ready to go.

The selection of astronauts is still underway. As more and more teams are formed and tested, those who are unfit and unsuitable for the mission will be weaved out. As this mission speaks for itself, it is the first mission to Mars that will allow humans to inhabit the planet. Only those who are actually in the proper condition to participate will be doing so. Groups of four are to be tested

seeing as only four people will be inhabiting the planet to start. Rigorous training must be implemented to ensure the safety, coherence, and success of Mars One After the first group is established, intervals of 26 months will pass before the next group of four lands on the planet. Why 26 months? Because the rotation of the Earth and Mars are closest every 26 months, making it faster and easier to make the trip. The goal is to expand the population until a community is established. Trees are to be grown, crops are to be planted, and life is to be sustained.

The cost of this mission is, as can be expected, very high. Putting the first four people on Mars is estimated to cost $6 billion in U.S. currency. That cost would be significantly higher if the mission was also to bring the four travelers back to Earth. However, the plan is for them to stay on Mars and live a life there, therefore the additional cost to return them do not exist. The current costs include communications satellites, the rover missions on the foreign planet, outpost supplies and hardware, ground stations, training for the chosen astronauts, and the cost of putting the consecutive teams on the planet at later dates. Transporting material to space is costly. It is because of the labor to assemble the hardware, the fuel used to travel, and the cost of each pound that is being transported. It is currently about $10,000 per pound, according to NASA, but they are hoping to reduce that cost to no more than $10 per pound within the next few decades.

Now comes the actual stabilization of life once the mission is started. When those selected to go first step foot on Mars, their training and testing modules back on Earth will allow them to face all sorts of challenges that might cross their path. Unfortunately, the unexpected is bound to happen at any given time, and so it will then become a struggle to overcome those challenges to safeguard the success of the mission. As previously stated, the goal is to inhabit the planet and establish a community to live. As more and more people join them after a few years’ time, progress will hopefully be made towards expansion and deepening the understanding of a foreign world. Questions will arise with every passing second. One year on Mars equates to 687 earth days, which means a year there is nearly twice as long as one is on Earth. Time is relative. Each atmosphere of different planets has a different length of day and year than the Earth.

The Martian depicts what life was like for one man on the planet. This is completely different. Eventually there may be thousands living together. Working together is of extreme importance. No doubt it could be possible that someone tries to become the supreme ruler of the planet. That simply cannot happen if life is to be preserved. A countless amount of television shows, movies, and novels depict what life is like in a new world. For there to be prosperity, peace and teamwork are the only choices. There can be no room for drawback. There can be no doubt. There can be no misfortunes.

As John F. Kennedy was able to see his mission through to put humans on the moon, this is purely the next step. In terms of future expansion to other planets, establishing a colony on Mars is an excellent beginning. The risk is high but the reward will be everlasting. In a hundred years’ time, people will still remember the Mars One mission. In a hundred years’ time, we may all be living on Mars, seeing the way our environment is headed in terms of sustainability and security of our planet.
