On March 18th 2017, the talented music artist, Drake, released the fifth album of his music career. According to Drake, More Life is considered a playlist rather than an album. The playlist consists of 22 songs with various styles and flows. “I want to do a playlist,” he said in an interview regarding his work, “I want to give you a collection of songs that become the soundtrack to your life.” Whether the project was an album or a playlist, More Life brought in record breaking numbers. It was streamed 300 million times worldwide on Apple Music within the first week of its release date. In the US alone, More Life was streamed 384.8 million times on every music service within the first week. This was a new record for music streaming that surpassed the one previously held by none other than Drake himself with his prior album Views, thus shattering that record by nearly 140 million streams. The records do not stop there, however. According to the label, projections have calculated that the playlist could potentially reach up to 600 million streams worldwide. More Life earned the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart with 505,000 units. Not only is it the number 1 album, but each of his 22 songs are also charted on the Billboard’s Hot 100.

Drake’s latest success is exemplary to his entire music career. Over the years, he has put out numerous hits and projects that were followed by substantial success. His core fan group continues to grow in numbers, only getting larger with each release. Due to his increased success as an artist, the question arises: does he have the potential to be one of the greatest of all time? This question poses a lot of debate among music listeners. As with many debates revolving around this topic, answers could be based off of opinions and individual preference. However, looking at the numbers behind his work, Drake is in the running to have his name potentially mentioned along with the best of all time. So what makes him so good?

The reason Drake is so heavily favored amongst today’s music artists is due to his uniqueness. Well known as a rap artist, Drake can both rap and sing. His ability to do both brings a lot of diversity to his music. This is most prevalent in his latest project, More Life. Songs like “Passionfruit,” “Get it Together,” “Madiba Riddim,” and “Blem” offer music listeners a rhythmic Caribbean vibe that would make anyone want to get up and move. Then there are tracks such as “Portland,” “Gyalchester,” and “KMT” that would be considered turn up music. These songs are perfect for working out or partying with friends. The album also consists of some R&B with his song “Since Way Back” featuring well known artist, PARTYNEXTDOOR. Lastly, tracks like “Do not Disturb” and “Teenage Fever” offer smooth rap for the listener to vibe out to. Drake’s diversity can appeal to the various interests of music goers, giving him a wide range of fans and supporters.

One of the greatest of all time? Only time will tell for the artist. However, it is safe to say that he is ultimately one of the best artists to date. Whether you are a fan of his music or not, the record breaking numbers support the claim.
