An Insider Interview of Bryant University's Career Fiar

I got the chance to interview Salome Mitchell, a career specialist at the Amica Center. The career fair is one of the biggest events held at Bryant University by the Amica Center as it is a great opportunity to network, and to get important insight on different career paths. I asked Salome a few questions about the career fair and this is what she had to say.

Salome can you tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to get into this line of work?

She got involved in working with college students as Resident Assistant when she was an undergraduate, and Salome realized there were so many options for her to work at a college! She eventually got her masters from the University of Rhode Island in College Student Personnel. Eventually she interned at the career services office and realized her passion for helping students’ find their career path. After two years working in Residence Life at Bryant, she went to pursue a career with the Amica Center for Career Education, and she absolutely loves it!

What is the career fair and how long has it been at Bryant University?

The career fair is an event where a variety of employers come to campus to recruit Bryant students for jobs and internships. The first career fair began in 2005 and has continued to grow ever since.

How often does the career fair happen?

The large career fair tends to happen once a semester. However, Amica has other expos and fairs throughout the year. The Amica Center also works with OCE and Management 200 to host the Volunteer and Internship Expo that will arrive in February. The Spring Career Fair is scheduled for February 22nd and Amica also hosts a Last Call Career Fair in the spring.Z

Is the career fair just for business majors?

Absolutely not! Although, a lot of companies attend do hire business majors, we also have a lot of companies that hire a variety of majors such as: AAA, Foxwoods Casino, Hanna Instruments, Hannaford Supermarkets, L.L. Bean, Textron, CVS Health, Fidelity, and Target. Many of the large companies that come to the career fair have needs in all different areas.

Is the career fair only for junior and seniors?

The Career Fair is open to all students. We encourage freshmen and sophomore students to go to the fair to assist in their career exploration. I always tell freshmen that even if they aren’t searching for an internship yet, just being exposed to how a career fair works will help them to be prepared in the future.

What advice would you give someone attending the career fair for their first time?

One of the most important things is to prepare ahead of time. I suggest to utilize the Career Fair App. Students should research, and look through the companies attending the fair. This helps a student when talking to companies because they know the positions that are available. Take time before the fair to have your resume reviewed. It’s also key to make sure you have your business professional outfit ready ahead of time. Make sure to practice your 30 second pitch about yourself and your firm handshake. P.S don’t forget to smile!

If you missed the career fair is there still potential to find an internship at Bryant University?

Definitely! It’s important to remember that different industries have different hiring timelines. While many finance, accounting, and related industries are actively interviewing right now, other industries like marketing and media may not start interviewing until later on. After the career fair be sure to keep an eye out for internships posted in BCC, and build your network by connecting with alumni/professionals in your industry.

What does the Amica Center offer to students in terms of interviewing, resume, and etc.?

Prior to the career fair we host Resumania, where students can have their resumes critiqued by employers. Employers also host mock interviews before the career fair. Students are also always welcome to meet with a Career Coach for guidance on any of these topics, including resume reviews, mock interviews, job and internship searches, and networking. We also have Quick Questions every day Monday – Friday 1-3pm and Tuesdays 4:30-7:00pm where students can meet with a Career Coach for about 10 minutes with no appointment needed. We also have an array of programs/ workshops, including a Social Sciences Series, Career Planning Courses, the Job Shadow Program, How to Work a Career Fair, and etc.

Is there anything new that you added to the career fair this year?

For the first time we had a Power Lab in the gym, where we provided resources to students to feel more confident when approaching employers. There was also a relaxation section in the gym.

How do you think the career fair went?

The career fair went great! We had 119 companies represented and 922 attendees. Although, we are still collecting feedback from students and employees.
