On Monday night, Bryant Women’s Basketball faced Robert Morris University, the number one Northeast Conference team, at the Bryant Chace Athletic Center. As the Bulldogs take on the opposing team, the ladies fought to make their way up in the NEC standings. After trailing Robert Morris for three quarters, the Bulldogs made their way on top by scoring a game-tying three pointer to send the game into overtime.
With sophomore guard Haley Connors shooting the game-tying three pointer in front of the Bulldog’s bench, the Bulldogs felt the momentum of the crowd cheering them on; the energy surrounding the basketball court fired up the ladies for overtime. With Robert Morris two post player being fouled out, this gave the Bulldogs the advantage on the post. As the coaching staff, the team, fans, dancers, and cheerleaders rooted for the Bulldogs, this reassured the Bulldogs that they were more than capable of beating Robert Morris.
Senior guard, Chanel Ramcharran, who assisted the lady bulldogs to a victory, says, “with Robert Morris leading the first 20 minutes, we definitely had to make some adjustments at halftime. The staple for our team this year is our defensive effort, and priding ourselves on containing the other team’s’ offense. With that being said, our defense was a main focus for us starting the third quarter, which led us to holding them to only 6 points.”
“We zoned in on running a certain play we knew would work because of the way they were defending the ball screens, this allowed us to go to our senior forward, Alex Klein, for four straight baskets to start the second half. Robert Morris was doubling our posts because they had the biggest offensive weapon, but with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Morgan Olander gave me a great pass out of the double team and I was able to knock down the three. This gave us the first lead of the game. In the fourth quarter with 12 seconds left, Haley Connors drilled a three pointer courtesy of Kiki Palmer to push us into overtime. That was just the momentum we needed in order to finish the game on top. There were so many important plays that occurred over the game, this was such a team win and everyone’s contribution made a huge difference.”
After this win the Bulldogs plan to finish the season strong as they continue with regular season games throughout the weekend and head back to Chace Athletic Center on Monday to face Central Connecticut State University for senior night.
Looking back on the lady Bulldogs 2016-2017 season so far, Ramcharran explains the one component that has fueled the team improvements throughout the season. She states, “Defensive identity is what they needed to find in order to win games.” It is imperative to the Bulldogs to find a cohesive way to keep defense and offense moving the ball constantly.
With this Bulldog win, this team is tied for the fourth conference position between Mount Saint Mary’s women’s basketball. It is the Bulldog’s goal to obtain a top four position for home court advantage for the first round of playoffs. For the past two years, Women’s Basketball has had home court advantage and it is imperative to the team to have the support of the Dawg Pound every step of the way. Overall, the team is looking to finish strong in order to put themselves in the best position to be successful. As for the Dawg Pound, let’s continue to support our athletes. Let’s Go Bulldogs!
