On Friday November 11th Bryant students will sacrifice a night of sleep at the annual Up ‘til Dawn event to honor the patients and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital who experience many sleepless nights during their battle with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Bryant University has been proud to partner with St. Jude and sponsor Up ‘til Dawn on its campus since 2010.  Last year students participating in this event raised over $43,000. Executive Director of Up ‘til Dawn event states “2016 is going to be Bryant’s best year yet!  We have a great event planned for November 11th to celebrate the fundraising efforts of the participating teams while staying up all night for the children at St. Jude.  Our goal is $55,000 and as of mid-October we’re halfway there!”

In 1998 a group of college students formed a fundraising event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  With the help of faculty and staff, their overnight event was extremely successful in raising awareness and money for the hospital.  Since then students from across the nation on more than 330 campuses have stayed Up ‘til Dawn raising more than $34 million for pediatric cancer research.

The Up ‘til Dawn event is a culmination of two months of fundraising activities by Bryant students.  This overnight, themed celebration, beginning at 11:00pm on Friday, November 11th, includes games, food, entertainment, and prizes. In addition to the student teams, corporate and community sponsors, event donors and the top fundraisers are recognized for their participation in and contributions to the St. Jude fundraising efforts.

How can you Stay Up for Good?  Start by forming a team of six people, designate a captain, and register at stjude.org/utd.  Then start fundraising by sharing your fundraising page on social media or by sending text messages and/or emails to families and friends.  Once a team raises $600 they are able to join the Up ‘til Dawn celebration on November 11th.

Bryant faculty and staff are welcome to participate, too.  Contributions can be made directly to the event at stjude.org/utd – Bryant University.  They can collaborate and sponsor an ABC’s of Cancer letter for $250.  The ABC’s of Cancer is artwork created by the children at St. Jude.  Each letter of the alphabet depicts their views on living with cancer or the lessons they have learned during their journey.  Each ABC’s of Cancer letter will be displayed at the Up ‘til Dawn event and presented to the sponsor following the event.  Questions regarding donations, sponsorship or participating in the event should be sent to stjudeutd@bryant.edu.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the leader in the research and treatment of pediatric cancer.  Since opening its doors in 1962, their dedication to saving children’s lives has increased the overall survival rate from <20% to an astounding 80%.  Unlike any other biomedical research centers, St. Jude does not charge its patients for any of the services they receive.  All of their funding is received primarily through individual contributions raised through events like Up ‘Til Dawn.  Danny Thomas, founder, once said the he would rather one million people donate one dollar rather than one person donating $1 million because then there would be one million people exposed to the mission of St. Jude – that no child dies in the dawn of their life.

By staying up all night the Bryant community “gives children the chance to follow their dreams” and pledges that “the little warriors of St. Jude do not have to fight alone.”
